What an event! I wish we would have done better on our imaging, but
this project prodded us into learning much more about image calibration
and what is needed to take scientific images.
The best part of the entire project was the night of July 3/4 when we
had a special event in the planetarium. On one side of the dome we were
watching the control room for the Deep Impact project on NASA TV, and a
live video feed from the Herrett telescope on the other. We did see the
brightening of the comet just after impact.
Original content, while the project was in progress...
We have been accepted as part of the Small Telescope Science Project of
the Deep Impact mission. That means that we will be using the Herrett
Telescope to image comet Tempel-1 before and after July 4th, when it will
be hit by a 820 lb mostly copper impactor.
